Resumo Para verificar a influência da altitude na estrutura anatômica de folhas e do xilema secundário de galhos de indivíduos da espécie Clethra scabra Pers. (Clethraceae) ocorrentes na Serra da Mantiqueira, estado de Minas Gerais, realizaram-se coletas de amostras nas cotas altitudinais de 1500, 1700, 1900 e 2100 m (metros). As folhas e galhos coletados foram fixados e preparados seguindo procedimentos usuais de microtécnica vegetal. Procederam-se análises anatômicas quantitativas utilizando software de análise de imagem. As folhas de C. scabra são hipoestomáticas com epiderme trisseriada e tricomas estrelados, mesofilo dorsiventral, parênquima paliçádico com uma a duas camadas celulares e o parênquima esponjoso com quatro. A nervura central com xilema desenvolvido e o feixe vascular envolvido pela bainha esclerenquimática. Análises de variância (ANOVA) e teste de Scott-Knott demonstraram que as espessuras do limbo foliar, mesofilo e parênquima paliçádico não apresentaram diferenças estatísticas significativas entre as altitudes avaliadas. O xilema secundário apresentou diminuição no comprimento dos elementos de vaso com o aumento da altitude na cota de 2100 m e o diâmetro tangencial dos elementos de vaso aumentaram nas duas menores altitudes e depois reduziram. Índices de vulnerabilidade de Carlquist e de mesomorfia diminuíram ao longo do gradiente altitudinal. Comprimento e diâmetro das fibras diminuíram com elevação da altitude. Assim, a altitude influencia nas modificações anatômicas apresentadas por folhas e galhos de C. scabra, que podem ser relacionadas a sua plasticidade fenotípica em resposta às diferentes condições ambientais.

Abstract To verify the influence of altitude on the anatomical structure of leaves and the secondary xylem of branches of individuals of the species Clethra scabra Pers. (Clethraceae) occurring in the Serra da Mantiqueira, state of Minas Gerais, samples were collected at altitudes of 1500, 1700, 1900 and 2100 m (meters). The collected leaves and branches were fixed and prepared following usual plant microtechnical procedures. Quantitative anatomical analyzes were performed using image analysis software. The leaves of C. scabra are hypoestomatic with triseriate epidermis and stellate trichomes, dorsiventral mesophyll, palisade parenchyma with one to two cell layers and the spongeous parenchyma with four. The central rib with developed xylem and the vascular bundle involved by the sclerenchyma sheath. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Scott-Knott test demonstrated that the thickness of the leaf blade, mesophyll and palisade parenchyma did not present statistically significant differences between the evaluated altitudes. The secondary xylem showed a decrease in the length of the vessel elements with increasing altitude at the 2100 m elevation and the tangential diameter of the vessel elements increased at the two lowest altitudes and then reduced. The Carlquist and the mesomorphic vulnerability indices decreased along the altitudinal gradient. Fiber length and diameter decreased with increasing altitude. Thus, altitude influences the anatomical changes presented by leaves and branches of C. scabra, which can be related to its phenotypic plasticity in response to different environmental conditions.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the influence of time and sodium sulfite concentration on tannin yield in Curupay bark and propose better extraction conditions. The extractions were performed using 100 g of dried bark and 1500 mL of water at 70 °C, with extraction times of 2, 3, and 4 h and amount of extractor salt at the concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4%. The following parameters were evaluated: content of total solids, total yield of solids, Stiasny index, and gravimetric yield of condensed tannins and non-tannins. Results show that the higher the concentration of sodium sulfite, the higher the content and yield of solids, as well as the higher the extraction of non-tannin compounds. Three-hour extraction time at 3.0% sodium sulfite concentration was the best condition to extract tannins from Curupay bark, under which a condensed tannin yield of 20.46% was obtained.

RESUMO Casearia sylvestris SW é uma espécie perene altamente adaptável que é encontrada em toda a América Latina e amplamente disseminada no Brasil. Este trabalho analisou as características ecológicas da anatomia da madeira de C. sylvestris ocorrendo em três tipos de ecossistemas: Cerrado, Floresta da Galeria (Norte de Minas Gerais) e Mata Atlântica (Sul de Minas Gerais). As características qualitativas foram semelhantes entre as plantas nos três ecossistemas, diferindo apenas na distribuição de máculas e tiloses próximas a máculas que eram mais frequentes no Cerrado e na Floresta da Galeria. Os resultados quantitativos mostraram diferenças significativas para vários parâmetros, bem como variação entre indivíduos dos tipos de vegetação do Norte e do Sul de Minas Gerais. A matriz de correlação entre as variáveis, características anatômicas quantitativas, características do solo, altura e diâmetro das plantas, mostrou que as plantas foram agrupadas por tipo de ecossistema. Casearia sylvestris pode adotar diferentes estratégias de sobrevivência em relação à segurança e eficiência do transporte de água pela adaptação ecológica da anatomia da madeira. As características anatômicas adaptativas à seca foram principalmente uma diminuição da frequência do vaso e um aumento da largura e frequência dos raios.

ABSTRACT Casearia sylvestris SW (Salicaceae) is a highly adaptive perennial species that is found throughout Latin America and widely spread in Brazil. This work analyzed the ecological features of wood anatomy of C. sylvestris occurring in three ecosystem types: Cerrado, Gallery Forest (Northern of Minas Gerais) and Mata Atlântica (Southern of Minas Gerais). Qualitative features were similar among plants in the three ecosystems, differing only in the distribution of pith flecks and neighboring tyloses that were more frequent in Cerrado and Gallery Forest. The quantitative results showed significant differences for several parameters, as well as variation between individuals of vegetation types of Northern and Southern of Minas Gerais. The correlation matrix of variables including quantitative anatomical characteristics, soil characteristics, height and diameter of the plants showed that plants were grouped by ecosystem type. Casearia sylvestris might adopt different survival strategies regarding safety and efficiency of water transport by wood anatomy ecological adaptation. The adaptive anatomical features to drought were mostly an decrease of vessel frequency and an increase of ray width and frequency.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo quantificar fenóis totais e taninos nas cascas de angico-vermelho (Anadenanthera peregrina) em diferentes classes de diâmetro, além de comparar duas metodologias de quantificação de fenóis. Foram coletadas cascas de 35 árvores, distribuídas em sete classes diamétricas. As cascas foram secas ao ar livre, trituradas e peneiradas, sendo utilizado o material retido na peneira de 60 mesh. Para a extração dos fenóis, utilizou-se metanol:água (50%). O doseamento de fenóis totais foi realizado pelos métodos de Folin-Denis e Folin-Ciocalteau modificados, e para taninos, pelo método difusão radial. Não foi encontrada diferença estatística entre as metodologias de quantificação de fenóis. Verificou-se aumento nos teores de fenóis e taninos com o aumento do diâmetro das árvores.

This study aimed to quantify total phenols and tannins in barks of Anadenanthera peregrina in different diameter classes and compare two methods of quantification of phenols. Barks of thirty-five trees, distributed in seven diameter classes, were collected. They were air-dried, ground and sieved; the material retained on 60 mesh sieve was used. Methanol:water (50%) solution was used for the extraction of phenols. Quantification of total phenols was performed by the modified Folin-Denis and Folin-Ciocalteau methods, while tannins were quantified by the radial diffusion method. No statistically significant differences were found between the phenol quantification methodologies. Increased contents of phenols and tannins were verified as the diameter of trees increased.
